Torneko no Daibōken: Fushigi no Dungeon (Torneko's Great Adventure: Mysterious Dungeon), released for the Super Famicom in 1993.
It is a landmark title in gaming history because it was the very first entry in the Mystery Dungeon (Fushigi no Dungeon) series, developed by Chunsoft.
Key Details:
-
The Character: The man on the cover is Torneko (known as Taloon in Western versions), the lovable merchant from Dragon Quest IV.
-
Gameplay: Unlike traditional Dragon Quest RPGs, this is a "Roguelike." The dungeons are randomly generated every time you enter, leading to the famous Japanese marketing tagline: "The RPG you can play 1,000 times."
-
The Art: The character design was done by the legendary Akira Toriyama (creator of Dragon Ball), which is why the art style and the "Slime" in the corner look so familiar.
Interestingly, while the Mystery Dungeon series became a massive hit and eventually included the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon spin-offs, this original Torneko game was never officially released in English for the SNES.
